The two releases are heading into the weekend with projected takings of around $10 million or more each
A24’s You Can See Everything and Warner Bros.’ Clayface are competing for the top spot at the North American box office during the Halloween weekend, with the documentary emerging as an unexpected contender against the DC horror film.
The two releases are heading into the weekend with projected takings of around $10 million or more each. However, You Can See Everything is currently leading Friday’s box office estimates, taking in approximately $3.2 million compared with Clayface’s $3.1 million.
The documentary, directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, is expected to earn between $10 million and $11 million in its third weekend. If it reaches the higher end of that projection, its domestic total could climb to $63.7 million.
Meanwhile, Clayface, directed by James Watkins, is targeting a second-weekend haul of more than $10 million. Its projected domestic total could reach $43.7 million by Sunday.
The competition marks an unusual Halloween box office race, as horror films typically benefit from the holiday’s audience interest. However, You Can See Everything has developed considerable online attention, with memes and discussions surrounding the film helping sustain its theatrical run.
The documentary follows the story of former Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and has become a surprising commercial success. After expanding from 855 to 2,655 theatres, it earned $19.5 million in its second weekend of wide release, bringing its 14-day domestic total to $52.7 million.
The film has also attracted attention for its awards-season prospects, with discussion growing around its potential Oscar recognition.
Clayface, meanwhile, marks a different kind of release for DC Studios, bringing a horror-focused take on the Batman villain to cinemas. The film opened with $33.7 million in its first week, according to the latest box office estimates.
Other films in the weekend’s top five include Laika’s Wildwood, which is projected to earn around $6.8 million in its second weekend, and Wicker, which is expected to take approximately $3.5 million.
The final weekend figures will determine whether You Can See Everything can hold on to its unexpected box office momentum or Clayface can claim the Halloween weekend’s top position.
