Canada Revenue Agency announces new layoffs as 735 employees receive notices

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) expects up to 260 employees to leave in a new round of workforce cuts affecting offices across Canada.

According to CTV News, the federal agency notified 735 executive and non-executive employees on Wednesday that their positions could be affected.

The CRA said 110 employees had been guaranteed continued employment, mainly in areas where staff are still needed, including compliance.

“As workforce adjustments proceed, up to 260 employees are expected to leave the CRA,” the agency said.

The Union of Taxation Employees reported that 534 of its members received notices. Affected branches include appeals, human resources, compliance and assessment services.

The union said the reasons include reduced spending, the end of pandemic-related work, digital service changes and organisational restructuring.

The CRA said it expects “services to Canadians will continue without disruption” during the changes.

The announcement follows an earlier round of cuts in April, when the agency said up to 210 positions would be eliminated, largely because of the winding down of the Federal Fuel Charge.

CRA staffing fell from 52,499 employees in March 2025 to 48,774 in March 2026.

The agency plans to reduce spending by $1.2 billion over three years. The wider federal government aims to cut 28,000 public service positions by 2029.
