Russia’s nuclear-powered strategic submarine has successfully test-fired a Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) as part of a combat training plan.

The missile was launched from a submerged position in the Sea of Okhotsk, Russian Far East, toward the Chizha test range in the Arkhangelsk Region, land close to NATO borders.

Speaking about its capabilities, the nuclear-capable missile travelled around 3,400 miles across Russia before reaching the Chizha test range.

Chizha Test Range is located on the Kanin Peninsula in northern Russia along the Barents Sea coast.

The launch of ICBM comes after President Vladimir Putin held a phone call with the leaders of Norway and Finland over the Ukraine conflict.

During the talks, Finland’s President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre urged Putin to de-escalate the tensions in Ukraine and told him the Ukrainian president was interested in holding direct talks with Putin.

The test range lies around 320 miles from Vardø in Norway and 386 miles from Nuorgam in Finland.

Mr Stubb described the discussion as “frank and substantive”, adding, “We are neighboring countries to Russia. The outcome of this war will have a direct impact on our and the broader European security. Ending the war requires direct discussions.”

Mr Støre said, “The war comes with enormous human and material costs. The suffering and destruction will impact generations. In the call we stressed the importance of de-escalation.”

The Generalissimo Suvorov (K-553) is a fourth-generation Borei-A class (Project 955A) strategic nuclear submarine designed by the Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering.
