Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has urged European countries to maintain pressure on Russia, warning that Moscow has shown no genuine interest in ending its war in Ukraine.

In a statement posted on X, Tsahkna expressed scepticism about diplomatic engagement with Russian President Vladimir Putin, arguing that tougher sanctions and continued support for Ukraine were necessary to achieve peace.

“Only increased pressure on Russia will make it take peace negotiations seriously,” Tsahkna said.

“Every contact with Russia must convey Europe’s unity and determination to support Ukraine and maintain pressure on Russia,” he wrote.

Tsahkna warned that Russia’s ambitions extended beyond capturing Ukrainian territory, accusing Moscow of seeking to control the entire country and weaken Europe’s security system.

He also questioned whether Russia was genuinely prepared to negotiate an end to the conflict.

“Ukraine wants peace, and Estonia supports all efforts to achieve it,” he said.

The Estonian foreign minister called for stronger economic sanctions, tougher action against sanctions evasion and continued international isolation of Russia.

He argued that lasting peace would require sustained European support for Ukraine and clear consequences for Moscow as long as the invasion continues.
