Barbie 2 may finally happen after all, with Skydance reportedly looking to get a sequel to Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar hit off the ground.
The development comes after Skydance took control of Warner Bros.’ catalogue and reportedly began considering Barbie 2 as one of its early priorities. The company is said to be interested in getting the follow-up moving as it looks for major crowd-pleasing films.
The future of the sequel had looked uncertain earlier this year after negotiations between Warner Bros., Gerwig and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling stalled. Warner Bros. had reportedly spent months discussing deals with the filmmaker and leading actors, with the studio facing a December deadline before the rights could revert to Mattel.
However, sources cited by Variety now claim that efforts are being made to ensure a follow-up goes ahead. The situation could also benefit from Ynon Kreiz, the former Mattel CEO, serving as co-CEO of the new company.
It remains unclear whether Skydance has successfully reopened or advanced negotiations with Gerwig, Robbie or Gosling. The three, alongside writer Noah Baumbach, have been central to discussions about the potential sequel, with Gerwig and Baumbach reportedly having an idea for the next story.
Even if the sequel receives the green light, Barbie 2 is unlikely to arrive soon because its key talent already have other major projects lined up. Gosling has booked Marvel’s Ghost Rider, Gerwig is directing The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix, and Robbie is attached to the next Ocean’s film.
The original Barbie, released in 2023, became a huge global success, earning around $1.4 billion worldwide and becoming Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing film. The possibility of a sequel has remained complicated by negotiations over compensation and the rights to continue the story with the original creative team.
For now, there is no confirmed production date for Barbie 2, but Skydance’s reported interest gives the long-awaited sequel a new possibility of moving forward.
