Watts already has experience working within the Star Wars universe through Skeleton Crew
Jon Watts, the director behind Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy, has been tapped to direct the first film in a new Star Wars trilogy written by Simon Kinberg.
Watts directed Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home for Marvel and Sony. His new Star Wars project will also mark a return to the franchise, having previously directed the Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.
Kinberg is writing the new trilogy and will also produce the films. The filmmaker has previously worked extensively with the X-Men franchise, producing several Fox Marvel projects and directing 2019’s Dark Phoenix. He also consulted on J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens and co-created the animated series Star Wars Rebels with Dave Filoni.
According to reports cited by Entertainment Weekly, Kinberg’s trilogy is expected to continue the Skywalker Saga. However, there have been conflicting reports about whether the films will introduce a completely new story or bring back Daisy Ridley’s Rey from the sequel trilogy.
Watts already has experience working within the Star Wars universe through Skeleton Crew, the coming-of-age series he created with Christopher Ford. The show follows four children who become caught up in an adventure across the galaxy and stars Jude Law.
The new trilogy is part of Lucasfilm’s plans to expand the Star Wars film franchise after the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga in 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. No release date has been announced for Watts’ film, and Lucasfilm has not yet publicly commented on the director’s involvement.
