Canada’s first F-35 fighter jet has taken its maiden flight in Texas, marking the debut of the country’s first new fighter aircraft model in 44 years.
The CF-35A Lightning II took off Wednesday from Lockheed Martin’s final assembly plant in Fort Worth for a flight lasting about 90 minutes, according to witnesses.
The aircraft carries “Canada” behind its cockpit and a maple leaf on its tail.
Lockheed Martin Canada acknowledged the milestone on X, saying: “The first CF-35A took to the skies for the first time today.”
The flight comes as Ottawa continues reviewing its planned F-35 purchase. Canada agreed in 2023 to buy 88 aircraft to replace its ageing CF-18 Hornets.
Prime Minister Mark Carney ordered a review of the purchase in March 2025 amid tensions with the United States.
Canada remains committed to buying the first 16 jets, while the government considers whether to purchase the remaining 72 or pursue alternatives, including Sweden’s Saab Gripen.
The first Canadian F-35s will initially be used to train Royal Canadian Air Force pilots at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona.
The first aircraft are expected to arrive in Canada in 2028, with initial operational capability planned for 2029.
