‘Resident Evil’ opens with $60m domestically, giving Zach Cregger his biggest opening weekend yet
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot opened with $60 million (£44.5 million) in North America, giving the video game adaptation the biggest opening weekend of the franchise.
The horror film grossed $60 million across its first three days, exceeding Sony Pictures’ initial $40 million projection and the $53 million to $55 million estimate given on Saturday.
Resident Evil opened in 3,684 North American cinemas and has a reported production budget of $75 million.
The film received a B+ CinemaScore from audiences, with 65% of its domestic audience identifying as male and 74% aged under 35. It also earned $43.8 million from 62 international markets.
The opening surpasses the previous franchise record held by Resident Evil: Afterlife, which grossed $60.1 million across its entire North American run. The Resident Evil series has collectively earned more than $1.2 billion worldwide.
Cregger’s reboot follows a medical courier, played by Austin Abrams, who attempts to deliver a valuable item during a deadly viral outbreak in Raccoon City. The film also stars Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser.
Resident Evil marks Cregger’s biggest opening to date, surpassing Weapons, which debuted with $43.5 million in August 2025. The film also currently holds a 96% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a 92% audience score.
Cregger has previously discussed the possibility of continuing the franchise. Before the film’s release, he said: “I can’t help thinking about other places this story could go” when asked about potential future involvement with Resident Evil.
Elsewhere at the box office, Practical Magic 2 is expected to take second place with around $12.2 million in its second weekend, bringing its North American total to approximately $50 million.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is projected to rank third with $6.5 million, taking its domestic total to around $944.5 million.
