NATO has formally welcomed a new security agreement between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland, which looks to defuse months of high-stakes diplomatic friction following President Donald Trump’s repeated pushes to acquire the Arctic territory.
While President Trump proclaimed on social media that the pact grants Washington “permanent control over security, and all other needs” in Greenland, including sweeping rights to expand U.S. military presence and bar non-NATO actors.
Notably, leaders in Copenhagen and Nuuk have clarified that the framework fully respects Danish sovereignty and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.

The pact explicitly bars non-NATO nations such as Russia and China from establishing military bases or troop presences, while restricting adversarial investments in sensitive sectors.
