ISLAMABAD:
A newborn girl who survived the fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), in which 14 other newborn babies were killed, has also died after 22 days of treatment, taking the death toll from the incident to 15, according to her death certificate and sources.
The baby, who was rescued alive from the blaze by a nurse, died at PIMS on September 17 after her condition continued to deteriorate following the fire.
The death certificate states that she died after cardiac and respiratory arrest.
According to the death certificate, the newborn had been admitted to PIMS on August 26 and remained under treatment for 22 days.
During her hospitalisation, she developed several serious medical complications, including sepsis, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and bleeding in the lungs. The baby’s condition continued to worsen after she was rescued from the fire. Despite treatment at PIMS, she could not recover from the severe complications that developed following the incident and eventually died on September 17, the death certificate states.
Sources said the newborn was among the babies who survived the fire that claimed the lives of 14 other newborn children. Her death means that the number of newborn babies killed in the PIMS fire has now risen to 15.
The baby had been rescued alive by a nurse during the fire and was subsequently kept under treatment at PIMS. However, her condition remained critical and later deteriorated amid the development of severe medical complications.
The death certificate records cardiac and respiratory arrest as the cause of death, while also documenting the complications, including sepsis, DIC and pulmonary bleeding, that emerged during her treatment.
