Cynthia Nixon says a surprising chunk of her wardrobe still comes from her most iconic role.

The Sex and the City alum, 60, made the revelation on the red carpet of the 2026 Emmys, claiming that about a third of her closet consists of clothing worn by her character, Miranda Hobbs, on the hit HBO series, which ended in 2004.

The topic came up when Nixon was asked whether she’d kept anything from her current role as Ada Brook on The Gilded Age, nominated this year for Outstanding Drama Series.

She joked that aside from a few pairs of gloves, there wasn’t much from that 1880s-set wardrobe practical enough for everyday life.

“Maybe some gloves. That’s about it. It’s not the kind of thing you could go to the Duane Reade in,” she joked of the accessory she wears for her role set in the early 1880s in New York City, adding, “The gloves are great. The gloves are great,” she told the press.

Her experience with Sex and the City, however, was a different story. Nixon explained that the production allowed cast members to take pieces from their characters’ closets after filming wrapped, and she took full advantage of that, saying it worked out great for her long-term wardrobe.

“You know, they let us have anything that we want,” she revealed when confirming that she took stuff from her character Miranda’s closet, noting that “maybe a third” of her wardrobe to date is made up of clothes from that role. “It’s great,” she said.

Reflecting on the show’s legacy, Nixon recalled how thrilled the cast felt when Sex and the City won its first Best Comedy Emmy back in 2001.

Nixon starred as Miranda alongside Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, and Kristin Davis across all six seasons of the original series, as well as its two follow-up films. She later returned for the revival series And Just Like That…, which wrapped its third and final season in 2025.

Nixon isn’t the only cast member who held onto pieces of the show’s wardrobe. Sarah Jessica Parker has previously said she kept nearly everything her character, Carrie Bradshaw, wore throughout the series and films, carefully storing the pieces by season, episode, and scene.
