BLACKPINK’s Lisa addresses racist allegations over leaked trainee video and N-word controversy

BLACKPINK star Lisa has addressed allegations surrounding leaked footage from her trainee years, explaining the circumstances behind a controversial video in which she was seen performing rap songs containing the N-word.

The 29-year-old rapper discussed the controversy during a Q&A session at the premiere of her documentary Always Lalisa at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival on September 11.

Lisa reportedly explained that she was very young when the footage was recorded and had only recently moved from Thailand.

She said English was not her first language and that she did not understand the history or cultural significance of the racial slur at the time.

Lisa recalled that, as a trainee, she was required to perform rap songs without fully understanding why the word was offensive.

The footage reportedly dates to the period before BLACKPINK debuted in 2016 and was leaked online in March 2025 by an individual claiming to be a former YG Entertainment employee.

Lisa did not deny the existence of the footage and said she has since educated herself about the issue.

She made clear that her views have changed and that she understands why the word is deeply offensive.

Lisa also addressed why her team did not issue an official statement at the time.

According to the explanation provided, her label LLOUD wanted to respond, but YG opposed the move.

With Lisa already facing intense backlash and death threats, the team reportedly decided that speaking out could escalate the situation.

Lisa said she understands the issue now and would never use the word again.
