Pete Davidson reflects on father’s 9/11 death as he raises daughter named in his memory

Pete Davidson says becoming a father has given him a different perspective on the death of his firefighter father, Scott, who died at the World Trade Centre during the 9/11 attacks.

Now 33, Davidson has reached the same age his father was when he died.

Speaking to the New York Post, the comedian explained how having a child has affected his understanding of the loss.

“I thought, ‘Oh, he was an old guy. He’s 33,’” Davidson said. “But now I’m there, and I have a kid, and that would be like my kid not having her dad.”

Davidson’s daughter, Scottie, was born last December and was named after his late father.

He said the 25th anniversary of 9/11 feels particularly difficult this year, while also giving him an opportunity to spend the day with his daughter.

“So, this year is extra tough, but also extra beautiful because I get to spend the day with Scottie,” he said. “It’ll be very healing and special.”

Davidson shares Scottie with his former girlfriend Elsie Hewitt.

He said they both felt the name suited their daughter when she was born.

Davidson is also participating in a comedy benefit at Madison Square Garden with Jon Stewart to mark 25 years since the attacks.

He said the event would help him “reclaim” the day and have “fun”.

He has previously spoken about losing his father at seven and the limited memories he has of him. Davidson said he remembers his father as “f**king hilarious” and recalled his smile, sense of humour and love of smoking.

He also admitted he is unsure how he will eventually explain to Scottie how her grandfather died.
