In recent weeks the prospects of Russia-Ukraine peace talks prospects have constantly been in a flux, marked by both sides’ lukewarm responses and resumption of strikes.
In the midst of a flurry of strikes, the Kremlin is still hopeful about the peace prospects with Kyiv.
In a recent development, Russia hopes of resuming US-mediated peace talks on ending the war in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday clarified that Moscow did not rule out the possibility of resuming the peace talks and they will soon be resumed without mentioning a definite timeline.
Peskov said “Moscow would not publicly discuss any specifics of a potential settlement, but there was a confirmed political will to resume talks.”
“We hope that these negotiations will resume in the foreseeable future, and we remain in contact with our American counterparts,” he added, a day after Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone.
Responding to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s suggestion, Peskov stated that a roadmap could potentially be drawn up to restart negotiations and work toward a mutually acceptable outcome.
Earlier this week, Russia signalled towards the possibility of initiating the talks with Ukraine under the mediation of the US despite the resumption of strikes.
On Wednesday, both sides exchanged strikes and two people were killed near the Moldova border as confirmed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Zelensky gave a cautious backing to Trump-vouched peace ideas, calling them “pretty good and decent ideas.”
“We need to understand whether we can implement them and make them effective. I don’t know yet if it will work out,” the Ukrainian president explained.
Direct diplomatic talks between Russia and Ukraine have stalled since February, prompting President Donald Trump to dispatch his negotiating team to Moscow and Kyiv over the weekend to jump-start the peace process.
