Dolly Parton’s friends and family are remembering the country music legend following her death at 80, reflecting on the extraordinary life, generosity and lasting impact of an artist who remained devoted to her work and the people around her until the very end.

Parton died on August 25, 2026, at a Nashville hospital after a brief battle with cancer. She had been admitted four days earlier. Her nephew Bryan Seaver announced her death, saying Parton had “lived in the light” and was now at peace. She was laid to rest beside her late husband, Carl Dean, in a private family service three days after her death.

She remained remarkably active during the final weeks of her life. On August 14, Parton recorded a video message for a Dollywood event after being unable to attend in person. She had also continued looking toward the future, exploring plans for avatar performances and anticipating the Broadway debut of her long-awaited musical.

Parton had been open about experiencing health problems since September 2025. At the time, she said she had become dizzy and dehydrated and acknowledged that she had neglected her own health while caring for Dean before his death in March 2025. She later cancelled a planned Las Vegas residency scheduled for September.

Even while dealing with her own health, however, Parton continued thinking about the people she could help. Her sister Stella, who spoke with her by phone every Tuesday morning over coffee, recalled that Parton remained interested in helping others even when her own doctors believed there might be little hope. Stella said her sister wanted doctors to consider experimental treatments if doing so could potentially help someone else in the future.

That instinct to give back became one of the defining parts of Parton’s legacy. Through her Imagination Library, she helped put more than 330 million books into the hands of children, while her philanthropy also extended to health initiatives, community development and other causes.

Her influence stretched far beyond country music. Over a career spanning roughly seven decades, Parton released 50 studio albums, earned 11 Grammy Awards and wrote songs that became international standards, including Jolene and I Will Always Love You. She also became a major presence in film and television through projects including 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias.

In the days since her death, tributes have poured in from across the entertainment world. Beyoncé, who collaborated with Parton on Cowboy Carter and recorded her own version of Jolene, described her as a guiding force whose artistry, humour and generosity left an extraordinary mark. Country stars including Reba McEntire, Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton, Kacey Musgraves and Vince Gill have also shared memories of Parton’s kindness and influence.

Parton’s manager Danny Nozell has also revealed that she had prepared a “project road map” covering music, books, products and other projects, ensuring that her creative work would continue after her death. Her estate has since announced plans for DollyFest, a celebration originally envisioned by Parton herself, which will now take place in Nashville and London in 2027.

For the people who knew her personally, though, Parton’s legacy is about much more than awards, records or business ventures. She leaves behind memories of a woman whose extraordinary fame never stopped her from making people feel personally seen.
