OSLO, Norway: Norway’s Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit marked their 25th wedding anniversary Tuesday with a subdued celebration as the royal family faced ongoing health challenges.
The couple, who married Aug. 25, 2001, chose a private celebration instead of the larger festivities that had reportedly been planned for the milestone. Mette-Marit is recovering from a lung transplant she underwent in June after her pulmonary fibrosis worsened.
The anniversary has also been overshadowed by the health of King Harald, 89, who is being treated at Oslo’s National Hospital for hemolytic anemia, a rare blood disorder.
The palace reportedly canceled a planned gala and other large-scale events as Mette-Marit continues her recovery. Instead, the palace released a new photograph of the couple embracing in a garden.
Mette-Marit, 53, appeared in good spirits in a pale yellow sweater and floral white skirt, while Haakon wore a casual blue shirt.
In a separate social media post captioned “grateful,” the palace shared intimate photographs from the couple’s 2001 honeymoon on Long Island, as well as images from their early holidays together.
The photographs included moments showing their wedding rings and Mette-Marit swimming in the sea with her son, Marius.
The palace said Sunday that King Harald’s health had “deteriorated.” An update issued Monday said there had been no significant changes and that the monarch’s condition remained stable.
