WASHINGTON: US Vice President JD Vance said that Washington’s top priority amid its ongoing conflict with Iran is to keep oil and gas prices low, while its second priority is preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
In an interview with US television, Vance said the United States was moving toward achieving both objectives during the ongoing conflict with Iran.
Vance described the situation as uncertain and complex, saying Iranians can sometimes act unpredictably and fail to honor commitments they have previously made.
He said the uncertainty makes it difficult to predict what will happen next regarding Iran, but the United States is closely monitoring developments while pursuing its stated priorities.

Earlier, President Donald Trump said, Aug.14, that he would “finish defeating” Iran and soon declare the Strait of Hormuz part of U.S. territory, while tensions continue to rise over control of the vital waterway.
Trump made the remarks during a political rally at a police academy in New York state, saying the United States has control over the strategic passage.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that the United States controls the Strait of Hormuz, an important route for global energy and commodity shipments. Iran rejects the claim and says the waterway remains under its authority.
“After we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated, pretty soon I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States,” Trump said, drawing cheers from supporters and police officers at the rally. He later added, “It’s true.”
