Former professional boxer Prichard Colón has died aged 33, more than a decade after suffering a life-changing brain injury during a 2015 fight.
His father, Richard Colón, announced his death on Facebook on Thursday.
“I regret to inform you of the passing of my son Prichard from this earthly world. Now he is in a better world,” he wrote.
Born in Florida and raised in Puerto Rico, Colon was considered a rising boxing talent and won 16 of his 17 professional fights, including 13 by knockout.
His career ended following an October 2015 bout against Terrel Williams in Virginia.
Colon suffered several blows during the fight, including an illegal punch to the back of his head.
He later showed symptoms of head trauma and was rushed to hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. His injuries forced him to retire from boxing.
The World Boxing Council paid tribute to Colón following his death, describing him as an “eternal champion”.
“Rest in peace, dear Prichard. Your legacy and your smile will live forever, in our hearts,” the WBC said.
The organisation said Colon’s injuries also helped drive tougher safety rules against blows to the back of the head and stricter medical protocols.
