Google Gemini surpasses 1 billion monthly users

Google’s artificial intelligence-powered Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly users, becoming the company’s fastest-growing service to reach the milestone, CEO Sundar Pichai said.

Pichai announced the milestone in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. He said Gemini is now the 14th Google service to surpass 1 billion users.

The achievement makes Gemini the second-most popular AI assistant after OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which reached the 1 billion-user milestone in June 2026.

Google launched Gemini in early 2024, meaning the AI assistant reached the milestone in about two and a half years. Its rapid growth has likely been helped by Google’s Android operating system, where Gemini is available as the default AI assistant on a range of smartphones.

Pichai also hinted at further updates for Gemini, saying Google has more developments planned that will be announced soon.

Despite Gemini’s rapid growth, Google continues to face strong competition in the AI market from OpenAI and Anthropic as companies compete to expand their AI assistants and services.
