Trump praises ‘nice guy’ Hakeem Jeffries after past attacks, calling him ‘low IQ thug

US President Donald Trump has suggested he could work with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, marking a notable shift after months of publicly criticising the senior Democrat.

Speaking in an interview with Punchbowl News, Trump described Jeffries positively despite their political differences.

“I think he’s a nice guy. I mean, I did. He was here. Yeah, we had a good meeting,” Trump said, referring to a previous meeting between the two.

Asked about Jeffries’ criticism of him, Trump replied: “He’s harsh because I’m harsh on him, you know. I’m sure he wouldn’t be so so harsh.”

When asked whether he could work with the New York Democrat if Democrats regain control of the House of Representatives, Trump responded: “Look, the people harsh on me, I’m harsh on them.”

According to Punchbowl News, Trump’s remarks contrast with previous attacks in which he referred to Jeffries as “Low IQ” and a “thug” on social media.

The comments come as Republicans prepare for November’s midterm elections, with Jeffries expected to become Speaker of the House if Democrats secure a majority.

Elsewhere in the interview, Trump criticised Senate Majority Leader John Thune over stalled voting legislation.

Asked whether Thune should remain in his leadership role, Trump said: “We’re going to find out, and I’ll let you know. He’s trying hard, I really believe that. But, uh, if he doesn’t get there, it would be unfortunate.”
