US Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed scored an important victory against incumbent House Representative Haley Stevens in Michigan’s Democratic primary, a closely watched contest that pitted progressives against moderates of the US party.
He will go on to face Republican incumbent Senator Mike Rogers in a seat that Democratic party must win if they hope to take control of the US Senate this November in the midterm elections.
Before Michigan’s Democratic primary, he “re-introduced himself” to voters and explained who he really is and what he stands for.
His introduction also helped voters make their decision to support him.
Here’s what he said:
“I’m Dr. Abdul El-Sayed an I’m running to represent Michigan in the US Senate.
I’m girl dad to may two beautiful daughters, Emmalee and Serene.
Sarah, my wife of 20 years, is the best of us.
My family immigrated from Egypt and I was raised by my father and stepmother, whose family has had roots in Michigan since the 1800s.
I wanted to be a doctor, not a politician.
In medical school (yes, I really do have an MD and a PhD), I realized that the reason why people are sick usually has lot less to do with physiology and a lot more to do with pathologies in our politics. Air quality, water quality, whether or not you can see a doctor if you get sick in the first place.
So, I went into public health and served as both Detroit and Wayne County health director where we worked hard to eliminate medical debt, put glasses on kids’ faces, and hold corporations like Marathon Petroleum accountable.
I am running to do three simple things… Get money out of politics, put money, put money in your pocket, and pass Medicare for all.
I support abolishing ICE. I’m the only candidate in the race who has never and will never take a dime of corporate money or AIPAC money.
I’m sick of our tax dollars being used to drop bombs on kids abroad when our kids here need healthcare here and good schools here.
I don’t dream of Isreal. I’m haunted by what America did to kids in Gaza and so many other places. I dream that the America that did so much for me can do that for every single kid here.
I’m proud to be endorsed by the UAW, Bernie Sanders, AOC, Rashida, and countless other progressive champions that understand Michiganders are ready for change. I hope I can earn your support, Michigan.”
