Thousands of people have been evacuated and hundreds of structures destroyed as the Spokane Area Fires continue to burn across eastern Washington, prompting state officials to seek federal assistance.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson said the state had requested emergency support from FEMA and had spoken directly with US President Donald Trump.
“The President was very gracious, as was Secretary Mullin. [President Trump] expressed his support for what the people are going through out here. I deeply appreciate him taking the time,” Ferguson said.
Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown described the fires as “the worst natural disaster our region has faced”, while Major General Gent Welsh said “Spokane woke up this morning to a tremendous tragedy.”
Brown also stressed the united response to the disaster, saying: “I want the people of Eastern Washington to know that the geographic and political boundaries that separate us are invisible today. We are pulling together. We are here for you.”
Congressman Michael Baumgartner added: “This is not Republicans and Democrats you see before you, it’s concerned elected officials who are going to do what’s right for this community.”
Meanwhile, Spokane County Fire District 9 said the forward spread of the Fairview Fire had been stopped, although crews remain at the scene strengthening containment lines and tackling hotspots.
Authorities continue to urge residents to monitor official evacuation notices.
