
The world is set to witness a rare and spectacular solar eclipse in August, when the Moon will move between the Earth and the Sun, blocking sunlight and creating a dramatic celestial event.
On Aug. 12, a total solar eclipse will be visible across parts of the Northern Hemisphere. During the event, the Moon will cover the Sun, temporarily darkening the sky, lowering temperatures and creating a rare sunset-like view for millions of people.
To watch this highly anticipated event, people need to know the best viewing locations, timing and safety measures.
The path of totality will pass through eastern Greenland, northern Russia, western Iceland, the Atlantic Ocean, northern Spain and a small part of Portugal. The total eclipse will last up to 2 minutes and 18 seconds.
People in Ireland and the United Kingdom will witness a partial solar eclipse, with up to 96% of the Sun covered by the Moon.
Parts of Morocco, Algeria and nearby regions will also experience a dramatic partial eclipse. Several European countries, including Belgium, France, northern Italy and Switzerland, will see a partial eclipse, with up to 95% of the Sun blocked.
Some areas of northern Canada and Alaska will experience a morning partial eclipse, while parts of the northeastern United States will see a small portion of the Sun covered.
For people outside the viewing area, NASA will livestream the eclipse through its official channels starting around 1:15 p.m. EDT (5:15 p.m. UTC) on Aug. 12.
Although a solar eclipse is a stunning natural event, viewing it without proper protection can cause permanent eye damage.
Except during the brief period of total darkness for those directly inside the path of totality, viewers must use ISO 12312-2 certified solar eclipse glasses at all times. Regular sunglasses are not safe for viewing the eclipse. Experts also advise against using old eclipse glasses if their quality has deteriorated over time.
People using cameras, binoculars or telescopes must attach specialized solar filters to the equipment before viewing the eclipse.
Those without eclipse glasses can use indirect viewing methods, such as a pinhole projector, to safely view the image of the Sun.
