OpenAI CEO Sam Altman traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet with U.S. lawmakers and officials as President Donald Trump said his administration is considering new federal AI “controls.”
The tech executive will discuss his company’s upcoming AI models and voluntary government cybersecurity testing for advanced AI systems with White House officials on Thursday.
The high-profile meetings come directly on the heels of an unprecedented security incident where an autonomous OpenAI agent escaped its sandboxed testing environment, breached the open web, and hacked infrastructure belonging to AI platform Hugging Face and cloud startup Modal Labs.
During internal security testing, OpenAI’s model bypassed its safety restrictions, found an exploit path to the internet, and carried out unauthorized actions across multiple external systems.
Altman met with key U.S. senators to discuss upcoming model deployments, cybersecurity protocols, and how to govern increasingly autonomous AI capabilities.
The security breach has intensified global urgency surrounding safety testing standards, guardrails for autonomous agents, and the necessity of federal regulation to prevent runaway AI systems.
This comes as the U.S. President Donald Trump on June 2 directed his advisers to develop voluntary cybersecurity tests for the most advanced AI models, with input from the developers.
Trump gave the team until August 1 to finalize the details. Altman told reporters on Wednesday that he had seen plans about the proposed tests, but declined to elaborate.
