Anthony Fauci is testifying before a Senate panel led by Republican Senator Rand Paul regarding the origins of Covid-19 with lawmakers heavily focusing on the “lab leak” hypothesis.
Fauci advised both the Trump and Biden administrations during the Covid pandemic and directed the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for nearly four decades prior to his 2022 retirement.
During hearing, he invoked the Fifth Amendment during a hearing before the US Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
“However, given Senator Paul’s obvious obsession with calling for my prosecution, his repeated slanderous comments about me, and recently his publicly releasing my unredacted personal diary aimed at embarrassing and intimidating me, the only conclusion I can reach is that the sole reason he is calling me before this committee is to get me to say something, anything, that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up in his words, quote, behind bars, unquote,” Fauci said.
“Therefore, although it pains me to do so, because of the respect I have for the legislative branch of government and my decades-long record of cooperating with Congress under the advice of my attorneys, I will invoke my right under the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution to refrain from answering your questions,” he added.
He remains a central figure in the ongoing Republican-led probe into pandemic origins and taxpayer-funded research.
The hearing will primarily be based on his handling of the pandemic, focusing heavily on a recently released 1100-page tranche of Fauci’s private journal entries spanning December 2019 to December 2022.
At the core of debate is the January 26, 2020 entry pointed out by Paul where Dr Fauci noted infections spread weeks before being detected at the Wuhan market. As per Fauci, he found the market as an amplifier rather than the initial spark. He also maintained his position that the virus originated via animal-to-human transmission while suggesting natural spillover is the most likely scenario.

While investigators frame the hearing as a necessary inquiry into scientific practices, members of the scientific community have frequently criticized the probe as an unfair harassment campaign against the veteran health official.
“For years, Americans were told a lab origin wasn’t just unlikely – it was dismissed outright by the very people funding and reviewing this research,” Paul said.
Fauci is protected from potential federal criminal prosecution covered by a preemptive pardon issued by former President Joe Biden before leaving office. The purpose of the pardon was to “guard against unjustified and politically motivated prosecutions.”
However, Fauci’s journals do not provide definitive proof regarding the origin of the pandemic. But from February 1, 2020 notes, it was revealed that out of 12 scientists two believed that virus originated naturally but others claimed deliberate insertion.
