President Donald Trump said on Thursday that a civil nuclear deal between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia is conditional on Riyadh joining the Abraham Accords to normalize relations with Israel.
In a statement posted on social media, Donald Trump said the proposed agreement would not allow Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium. He said the nuclear program would be used only to generate electricity and for other peaceful, nonmilitary purposes, not for developing nuclear weapons.
Trump said the agreement would move forward only if Saudi Arabia joins the Abraham Accords and normalizes relations with Israel. He added that the United States supports peaceful civilian nuclear programs and noted that similar agreements already exist with countries including the United Arab Emirates and Iran.
Trump also claimed that Yemen’s Houthi rebels fired at two Saudi ships the previous night. He warned that if the Houthis carry out further attacks, the United States would take strong action against Iran.
Calling the Houthis an Iranian proxy, Trump said Tehran would be held responsible for the group’s actions. He added that the United States would hold Iran accountable for any future Houthi attacks.
Trump said the Houthis had previously acted more responsibly during the conflict with Iran but had now resumed their attacks. He warned that if the attacks continue, both the Houthis and Iran would be targeted. He also expressed disappointment over the recent attacks on commercial ships.
