Trump pays E. Jean Carroll over $5m in sexual abuse and defamation case

Writer E. Jean Carroll has officially received more than $5.6 million awarded in her sexual abuse and defamation case against US President Donald Trump, following a court-ordered transfer of funds.

The payment of $5,625,005.48, including interest, was ordered by Judge Lewis Kaplan after the US Supreme Court declined to hear Trump’s appeal.

The transfer to Carroll’s lawyers was confirmed on the court docket on Tuesday.

Trump had sought to delay the payment while asking the Supreme Court to reconsider its decision.

His legal team is continuing efforts to block the transfer through a federal appeals court.

According to a court filing, Carroll plans to use the money to fund her retirement and will keep it in an interest-bearing account while further legal proceedings continue.

In a statement, Carroll’s lawyer Roberta Kaplan said: “Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury found President Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll.”

“Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict.”

In 2023, a jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming Carroll over statements denying her allegations and awarded her $5 million in damages.

A separate jury later awarded Carroll $83 million in another defamation case, which Trump is continuing to challenge through the courts.
