ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has launched an expansion project at Skardu International Airport aimed at modernizing the facility and strengthening tourism and air connectivity in the country’s northern Gilgit-Baltistan region.
The authority said the terminal building will be expanded from 21,000 square feet to 39,000 square feet. The project also includes larger departure and arrival lounges, additional check-in counters, expanded vehicle parking and a new cargo office block to accommodate growing domestic and international passenger traffic.
Under the plan, the airport’s departure lounge capacity will increase from 300 to 900 passengers, while the arrival lounge will be expanded from 80 to 200 passengers. Executive lounges will also be added to improve passenger services.
To enhance operational efficiency, the number of check-in and briefing counters will rise from six to 10, while parking capacity will triple from 200 to 600 vehicles.
The new cargo office block is expected to improve logistics and support commercial activity in the region.
The PAA said the project is designed to improve travel facilities while promoting tourism, economic development and regional air connectivity across Gilgit-Baltistan.
PAA spokesperson Saifullah Khan said the project is in its initial phase, with site marking and layout work already underway.
