Karachi: Massive fire rages in Landhi factory zone, 5 injured

Karachi: A massive fire that erupted in a factory within the Landhi Export Processing Zone last night is still not under control, even after more than nine hours of continuous firefighting efforts. Fire Brigade officials confirmed the blaze began around 3 AM, and while the exact cause remains unknown, strong winds are believed to have contributed to its rapid spread.

The inferno has caused extensive damage within the industrial area. It initially broke out in a factory containing large quantities of cardboard, which fueled the flames. Due to the high winds, the fire quickly spread, engulfing an adjacent factory that dealt with old clothes, leading to significant destruction.

As efforts to contain the blaze intensify, more resources have been mobilized. Initially, 11 fire tenders and one snorkel were deployed, but the operation has since expanded to include 16 vehicles and two snorkels. Water tankers from Landhi Future Hydrant are continuously arriving, and the Fire Brigade has also called on the Water Board for additional supply. The Water Corporation has declared an emergency at key hydrants to ensure uninterrupted water flow to the site.

Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has taken stern notice of the incident. He has directed officials to bring the fire under control swiftly to minimize further damage and has requested a comprehensive report from the Deputy Commissioner Karachi on how the fire started. The Chief Minister also called for a complete inspection report of factories in the area once the fire is extinguished. All employees present at the factory, fewer in number due to the Eid holidays, were immediately rescued.
