Iran’s chief negotiator and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf said on Saturday Tehran is prepared for “full-scale defence” if the United States fails to honour the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two countries.
According to Al Jazeera, Ghalibaf said Iran remains committed to defending the country while warning against any breach of the agreement by Washington.
“We have never stopped preparing to defend our country, and at any moment the Americans betray the understanding, we are ready for full-scale defence,” Ghalibaf said.
“Ending the war is a priority for the countries of the world, but everyone should know that this conflict will never end with Iran’s surrender”, he added.
His comments came after US President Donald Trump posted on social media that Tehran and Washington had agreed to continue talks, while also claiming the ceasefire between the two sides was “over”.
The latest remarks highlight ongoing uncertainty surrounding relations between Iran and the United States despite recent diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions.
The memorandum of understanding was intended to reduce hostilities and create a framework for further negotiations.
However, statements from both sides in recent days have raised fresh questions about the future of the agreement and whether it can prevent further military escalation in the region.
