Horror film Obsession has surpassed $400 million at the global box office, continuing one of 2026’s most successful theatrical runs after being produced on a reported budget of just $750,000.
The film reached a worldwide total of $403 million over the weekend, combining $245.3 million in domestic ticket sales with $157.7 million from international markets.
Written and directed by YouTube filmmaker Curry Barker, Obsession stars Inde Navarrette and Michael Johnston alongside Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless and Andy Richter.
The supernatural thriller follows Bear, played by Johnston, whose wish for Nikki, portrayed by Navarrette, to love him more than anyone else leads to deadly and unforeseen consequences.
The film was acquired by Focus Features for approximately $15 million following its premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival before opening in North American cinemas on May 15 with $17.1 million from 3,016 theatres.
Its commercial performance has since broken several records. According to the report, Obsession became Focus Features’ highest-grossing release on June 8 before surpassing The Blair Witch Project as the highest-grossing film festival acquisition of all time.
The latest milestone comes despite the film already being available on premium video on demand. Deadline, reported that Obsession earned an estimated $5.3 million from 2,640 North American cinemas over the weekend, lifting its domestic total to $245.3 million.
The film has also performed strongly on digital platforms, topping streaming charts during its first week of premium video-on-demand release across Apple TV, Fandango at Home and Prime Video in the United States.
Obsession has emerged as one of two independent horror successes this summer, alongside Backrooms, further highlighting the commercial impact of low-budget genre films at the global box office.
