‘Cancel It IMMEDIATELY’: Fans erupt after Colleen Hoover joins Amazon MGM’s ‘Love, Theoretically’ adaptation
The upcoming adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel incited outrage after Hoover was announced as a producer
Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel Love, Theoretically has prompted widespread backlash from readers after it was announced that author Colleen Hoover will serve as a producer on the project.
According to Deadline, the studio has acquired the film rights to Hazelwood’s romance novel, with Along for the Ride filmmaker Sofia Alvarez attached to direct and adapt the screenplay.
Hoover will produce through Heartbones Entertainment alongside her producing partner Lauren Levine, while Hazelwood will also executive produce.
Rather than celebrating the adaptation, many fans focused their attention on Hoover’s involvement, with criticism quickly spreading across social media.
Hoover remains a divisive figure, with critics continuing to reference past controversies, including Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni’s explosive scandal from the film adaptation of her book It Ends With Us and accusations of problematic portrayals of abusive relationships in her works.
One fan wrote, “cancel it IMMEDIATELY. why is a woman who covered up her sons assault producing? The woman who profits off abuse in her books & tried to make a coloring book of an abuse book PRODUCING LOVE THEORETICALLY? ali what the hell?”
Another said, “Colleen Hoover and producing should never be in the same sentence. Need this canceled yesterday.”
Others argued that Hoover’s attachment could overshadow Hazelwood’s work. One post read, “Colleen Hoover adaptations all flops so now she trying to leech off of Ali Hazelwood popularity.”
Additional reactions included, “colleen hoover needs to stop terrorizing us already we’ve had enough of her atrocious books and now she’s out here set on ruining other adaptations too”, while another fan wrote, “you try to have a good day and then you find out colleen hoover is producing a film adaptation of one of your favorite books like ok.”
Based on Hazelwood’s novel, Love, Theoretically follows rival physicists whose lives become intertwined through academic competition and mistaken identities.
The announcement comes ahead of the release of the film adaptation of Hazelwood’s The Love Hypothesis, which is due to premiere on Prime Video in September.
Additionally, the film adaptation of Hoover’s Verity, which she also served as a producer on, is set to release on October 2.
