Is ‘Backrooms 2’ in the works? Everything known so far after strong box office debut

Following the film’s $118 million worldwide opening, filmmaker Kane Parsons is said to be planning a follow-up project

A sequel to Backrooms is in early development following the strong box office performance of A24’s breakout release, according to Deadline.

Following the film’s $118 million worldwide opening, filmmaker Kane Parsons is said to be in the early stages of planning a follow-up project, though no formal production timeline has been confirmed.

Sources state that Parsons is currently seeking a screenwriting collaborator to help develop the sequel. The report notes that discussions remain preliminary, with no cast attachments, greenlight, or production schedule in place.

Parsons, who built the Backrooms concept through his online work, is understood to have an ongoing agreement with A24 for further projects within the franchise.

The sequel is expected to expand the universe into a broader anthology-style format, building on material already developed through his YouTube content.

The success of Backrooms has also been linked to a wider trend of online creators transitioning into mainstream film production.

The film is reported to have drawn a predominantly young audience, with a significant share under the age of 35, reflecting growing studio interest in digital-native intellectual property.

Industry reporting also notes that the production is supported by multiple partners, including 21 Laps, Atomic Monster/Blumhouse, Odd Fellows and Chernin Entertainment, alongside A24.

While early box office estimates suggest continued strong performance, insiders indicate the sequel remains at a conceptual stage as development conversations continue within the studio system.
