Lee Jae-yong, chairman of Samsung Electronics, met with Rick Tsai, Chief Executive Officer of MediaTek, in Taiwan this week to discuss possible business cooperation in the semiconductor sector.
Industry experts believe the two companies discussed potential partnerships during the high-level meeting. MediaTek is one of Taiwan’s leading fabless semiconductor companies and currently works with TSMC for chip production.
Fabless companies design semiconductor chips but do not own manufacturing facilities. Foundry companies, such as Samsung and TSMC, manufacture chips for those firms.
Samsung has been increasing efforts to compete in the global foundry market as demand for AI related semiconductors continues to grow rapidly. This meeting also helped Samsung reassure international partners after the company recently reached a last minute labor agreement with its workers’ union.
The agreement helped avoid possible disruptions to the global chip supply chain. Industry observers believe Samsung wants to maintain confidence among major technology clients and business partners.
Samsung secures major global orders:
Samsung recently secured important foundry orders from major global companies, including Tesla and Qualcomm. Analysts say partnerships with companies like MediaTek could further strengthen Samsung’s position in the highly competitive semiconductor market.
The global chip industry is currently seeing strong demand due to rapid growth in AI technology, smartphones, and advanced computing systems.
Samsung is working to strengthen its foundry business, which manufactures chips designed by other companies. This is important because more firms are now outsourcing chip production to meet rising AI-driven demand. At the same time, partnerships between fabless companies like MediaTek and major foundries are becoming more important for global supply chain stability. This helps reduce risks and ensures faster production of advanced chips.
