Mark Fuhrman, former Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Detective, died at the age of 74.
He died in his residence in Kootenai County, Idaho, where he had been living since his retirement from the LAPD, as confirmed by his family on May 18,
The former detective died after battling an aggressive form of throat cancer.
Mark Fuhrman had been an infamous personality as he was convicted of lying during testimony in a high-stakes OJ Simpson murder trial over 30 years ago.
Who was Mark Fuhrman?
Fuhrman started his career by serving in the United States Marine Corps where he eventually secured the rank of Sergeant. After bidding farewell to the Marine services, he joined the Los Angeles Police Academy.
Fuhrman became the debatable personality when he was one of the first detectives to arrive at the crime scene and found bloody gloves at O.J. Simpson’s property.
Soon he became the focal point in the case when the defense team accused him of planting evidence in pursuit of racial agenda.
He was also blamed for exhibiting racial discrimination against coloured communities. But Fuhrman denied this.
Polarizing figure
Fuhrman became one the most controversial figures in O.J. Simpson trial when his credibility was systematically dismantled. Under oath, Furhman testified that he had not used racial slurs targeting African Americans in the decade.
But his testimony proved a lie when the defense team led by Johnnie Cochran produced evidence of tapes related to recorded interviews the detective had given to aspiring screenwriter Laura Hart McKinny in which he used these slurs repeatedly.
As per the content of tapes, he not only used the “N-word” against the races but also carried out police brutality and harassment of female officers, completely going against his sworn testimony. As a result, he was charged with perjury in 1996.
The false testimony of Fuhrman also damaged the reputation of a law enforcement institution marked by systemic racism and police misconduct within the LAPD.
Following the trial, Fuhrman retired from the LAPD and moved to Idaho where he worked as a television and radio commentator and true-crime author.
