Two police personnel killed as trailer rams into mobile van on Super Highway

Police say driver was taken into custody; he told investigators he fell asleep while driving, leading to the accident

KARACHI:

A speeding dumper truck on Monday rammed into a police mobile van deployed for checking near Chakwal Pump on the Super Highway (Hyderabad–Karachi road), killing a sub-inspector and a constable, police said. The driver has been arrested.

According to police, a 22-wheel trailer struck the stationary police mobile during routine checking at around 5:40am, killing two officers on the spot. A third officer survived the incident. The impact was so severe that the police vehicle was crushed and trapped beneath the trailer.

Police said the driver, identified as Shahabuddin, was taken into custody. In his initial statement, he reportedly told investigators he fell asleep while driving, which led to the accident. Rescue 1122 and Edhi volunteers reached the scene along with ambulances after being alerted. Motorway Police also assisted in the recovery operation.

Heavy machinery, including a crane and lifter, was used to pull apart the wreckage and retrieve the bodies from the mangled vehicle.

According to police, Sub-Inspector Sahib Khan, Constable Parwarish, and Constable Wajid were on duty in the police mobile when the trailer hit them.

Sub-Inspector Sahib Khan died on the spot, while Constable Wajid was trapped in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries during rescue efforts. Constable Parwarish remained unharmed.

The bodies of the deceased personnel were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and a private hospital near Gadap City police station. Both were posted at Gadap City police station.
