Religious scholar killed in targeted attack in Charsadda

A religious scholar Muhammad Idris was killed in a targeted attack in the Utmanzai area of Charsadda, triggering widespread grief and renewed concerns over security conditions in the region.

According to initial reports the incident took place when the cleric was traveling towards his seminary. Unidentified armed individuals targeted him and fled the scene. Authorities have not yet officially confirmed the motive behind the attack, while investigations are underway.

The killing sparked strong reactions from local residents, religious circles, and community leaders, who condemned the incident and expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation. Calls have also been made for improved protection of religious scholars and stricter law enforcement in sensitive areas.

This incident comes amid a series of attacks reported in different districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in recent months where religious figures and political personalities have been targeted.

Earlier reported incidents include the killing of a religious leader in Bajaur, an attack in South Waziristan and other violent episodes in the province.

On 21 July 2025 a religious leader was killed in the Tangi area of Charsadda, while on 10 July 2025, a political and religious figure was killed in Bajaur’s Shandai Mor area.
