Valve delays Steam Machine as hardware shortages affect 2026 release plans

Valve cites supply issues for Steam Machine delay while confirming Steam Controller launch on May 4

Valve has confirmed delays to its upcoming Steam Machine hardware, citing ongoing supply chain challenges affecting its 2026 product lineup.

The Steam Machine was first unveiled in November 2025 alongside the Steam Controller and Steam Frame, as part of the company’s expansion into PC gaming hardware.

While the Steam Controller is scheduled for release on May 4, the Steam Machine has been pushed back from its original early 2026 launch window, with no revised release date announced.

Speaking about the delay, Valve designers Lawrence Yang and Steve Cardinali acknowledged the internal impact of ongoing component shortages.

Yang said, “I mean, obviously we’re bummed that this is the state of things,” adding that issues such as “RAM shortages, memory shortages, price hikes” are affecting multiple companies across the industry.

He further explained that these challenges are “unavoidable” and influence any hardware dependent on such components.

“We’re doing our best to make sure that we can make the product and have it still available at as good and competitive a price as we can. But yeah, it’s challenging for sure,” he said.

Cardinali described the timing of the disruption as particularly difficult during development. “It’s frustrating. But yeah, we’re working our hardest to get a resolution there,” he said.

Valve had previously indicated uncertainty around pricing and release timelines due to “limited availability and growing prices” of key components. The wider technology sector has been affected by similar constraints, driven in part by increased demand for memory and storage.

Despite the delay, Valve confirmed that it does not intend to align the launch dates of its hardware products artificially. Yang said, “We knew that there was some chance that schedules would move, and we would just ship them when they were ready.”

The company also stated that the Steam Controller’s release timing was based on readiness and stock availability, with Cardinali noting, “We wanted to make sure we had a lot on hand, because we do anticipate high demand.”

Other Valve hardware, including the Steam Deck, has also experienced stock shortages in several regions.
