Karachi water quota increase proposal moves ahead

Significant progress has been made on a proposal to increase Karachi’s water allocation from Hub Dam, following a letter sent by Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC) Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, officials said.

According to a Spokesperson for the water utility, Sindh Local Government Secretary GOS has forwarded a summary to the Chief Minister of Sindh based on the request, marking a key development in the process.

The KW&SC CEO had requested an increase in the city’s water quota in view of Karachi’s rapidly growing population and severe water shortage. The letter proposes raising the existing supply from 100 million gallons per day (MGD) to 200 MGD.

Officials noted that Karachi’s water allocation from Hub Dam has remained unchanged at 100 MGD since 1981, while the city’s population and water demand have increased manifold over the same period, turning the shortage into a serious urban challenge.

The Spokesperson KWSC further stated that the Sindh Government has already developed the necessary infrastructure to support an increased supply of 200 MGD. With the completion of the New Hub Canal, Karachi now has the full technical capacity to receive 200 MGD of water.

He added that increasing the water quota has become an urgent necessity; however, the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government.

Officials said the provincial government’s proactive steps reflect a continued effort to address the city’s pressing civic issues and ensure improved access to basic services for residents.
