Pakistan produces over 4.5m mobile phones in two months

Pakistan is seeing a strong increase in locally manufactured smartphones, which is an important step toward digital self-reliance and reducing the country’s dependence on imports.

Recent figures show that local production is now playing a bigger role in meeting the country’s mobile phone demand. According to documents from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, more than 4.57 million mobile phones were produced locally in the first two months of 2026. Out of these, about 2.03 million were smartphones, showing that more people in the country are choosing advanced mobile devices.

The sharp rise in local production shows that a large part of Pakistan’s mobile needs is now being fulfilled through domestic manufacturing. The data also shows that local production was much higher than imports during the same period. While more than 4.57 million phones were made locally, imports were limited to around 870,000 units in the first two months of 2026.

In February alone, about 2.88 million mobile phones were produced locally, while only around 400,000 units were imported. Pakistan is also making progress in modern technology, as 30,583 5G mobile phones were assembled locally in January 2026. This shows that the country is gradually moving toward better telecom technology and faster internet connectivity.

The increase in local production has also reduced dependence on imports. According to PTA data, mobile phone imports fell by 13.26 percent in February 2026 compared to January. The import bill also decreased to $155.547 million in February from $179.336 million in January.

The fast growth in local mobile manufacturing is being seen as an important milestone in Pakistan’s journey toward digital independence. With production increasing and imports going down, the country is moving closer to building a strong and sustainable telecom manufacturing sector.
