Speaking at an earlier event, AR Rahman revealed how his mother helped him overcome suicidal thoughts when he was young. Here’s how you can help your loved one too.
AR Rahman is one of the most celebrated musicians in recent times. The musician started his career by composing jingles for documentaries and advertisements. Speaking at an earlier gathering, the musician revealed that he had struggled with suicidal thoughts and how it was his late mother who had helped him through that phase.
Speaking at an event organized by the Oxford Union Debating Society students, AR Rahman said, “When you live for others, you won’t get these thoughts. That’s one of the most beautiful advice I got from my mother. When you live for others, and you’re not selfish, there’s a meaning to your life. I took it very seriously, whether you’re composing for somebody, writing for something, buying food for a person who can’t afford it, or you just smile at someone, these are the things that keep us going.”
In case you know someone who is going through a tough time, here are five simple ways in which you can help them.
Recognize the signs and the patterns
If you notice that your loved one is withdrawing from social activities, exhibiting a drop in energy, or expressing hopelessness and despair, express your concern and listen to them with an open mind.
Encourage them to seek professional help
Sometimes some things are beyond our control and only professionals can guide them in the right way. A mental health professional can assist them in such difficult times and offer necessary guidance and ways to deal with suicidal thoughts.
Regularly keep a check on them
Keep checking up on them regularly and let them know that you are there for them. Simply listen to them and not offer quick fixes or resolutions.
Grow a support system for them
Build a network with their friends and family members who can help them come out of the rut. This will also help them not slip into isolation.
Have patience
The road to recovery takes time and all you need to do is support your loved one and be patient with their growth.
