Bhai Dooj will be observed on November 3.

Bhai Dooj is celebrated annually on the last day of the five-day Diwali festivities. According to Drik Panchang, this year’s Bhai Dooj will be observed on November 3. This special occasion honours the cherished bond between siblings. Sisters pray for the longevity, health, and prosperity of their beloved brothers. Bhai Dooj is known by various names in India, including Bhau Beej, Bhatra Dwitiya, Bhai Dwitiya and Bhai Phonta. Many people are unaware of what should be kept on the puja plate during the ritual. Astrologer and Vastu consultant from Bhopal, Pandit Hitendra Kumar Sharma, advises that while preparing the ritual plate (thali) for Bhai Dooj, one should ensure that all essential items are carefully placed, as an incomplete setup is considered to result in an incomplete ritual. Let’s take a look at the items that should be included in the plate.

For Bhai Dooj, the plate should contain roli (red powder) for the tilak (forehead mark), and sandalwood paste can be used as well. Additionally, include akshat (unbroken rice) for prosperity, as the tilak is considered incomplete without it. A red sacred thread (kalawa) should also be included to tie around the brother’s wrist.

A betel nut should be placed in the plate, symbolising Lord Ganesha, along with a silver coin to bring wealth and prosperity into the brother’s life. A coconut is also recommended as it helps remove negativity from life.

The plate should also include a flower garland for the brother to wear after the tilak, along with a sweet treat for him to eat. One banana is suggested as well, as feeding it is believed to strengthen the influence of the planet Jupiter.
