Karnataka Formation Day History

Prior to India’s independence, the Kannada-speaking region was a part of several major princely states and British colonies, including Mysore, Hyderabad, Bombay and Madras presidencies.

The administrative divisions of India failed to correspond to the regions on linguistic and cultural lines.

As a result, the Kannada-speaking population was geographically divided.

Post-Independence, there was a demand to redraw the states on a linguistic basis. In fact, this movement started in the 1950s with literature and political giants backing the demand to bring all Kannada-speaking regions together.

These demands were, to a large extent, met with the States Reorganisation Act of 1956 paving the way for the formation of a separate state bringing together all Kannada speaking regions in the erstwhile Mysore, Bombay and Madras presidencies. The new state was formed on November 1, 1956. It was named as Mysore State.

However, following a stir by some regional groups, particularly in North Karnataka, the state was renamed as Karnataka in 1973 to embrace all the Kannada-speaking areas.

The name was derived from the Kannada word ‘Karunadu’, meaning high plateau.

Significance of Karnataka Rajyotsava

It promotes pride among Kannadigas as it’s a celebration of the rich culture, language and heritage of the state. The day also symbolises a cohesive and harmonious living among the people of the state despite regional diversities.

The government pays tributes to people who have made significant contributions to the state in various fields. The Kannada Rajyotsava Award is conferred on many eminent personalities from various fields by the government every year on this day.

The celebrations mark several events across schools, colleges, government bodies and social organisations highlighting Karnataka’s language and culture. Singing of the state anthem, “Jaya Bharatha Jananiya Tanujate”, at the events is a common practice on this day.
