Minimum Salary Set to Rise by 8.1% to Rs40,000
The Sindh Minimum Wages Board has suggested raising the minimum wage by Rs3,000 for different categories of workers across the province. The board sent a proposal to the provincial government recommending an 8.1% increase in the monthly minimum wage from Rs37,000 to Rs40,000.
This proposed raise would cover unskilled adults, adolescents, semi-skilled, skilled, and highly skilled workers. These changes, if approved, will take effect from July 1, 2025, and will apply to 60 industries in Sindh. The board’s recommendations were shared in the Sindh Government Gazette by Mohammad Naeem Mangi, the Secretary of the Board.
The notice said that people can submit objections to the proposal within 14 days. According to the proposal, the minimum salary for semi-skilled workers is suggested at Rs41,280, for skilled workers Rs48,910, and for highly skilled workers Rs50,868.
The notification also made it clear that these new minimum wages should not be seen as maximum limits. Any existing salaries that are already higher than the proposed rates must not be reduced. Employers can still pay higher salaries, either on their own or through agreements, based on factors like experience, cost of living in a certain area, or other relevant reasons.
The revised wages will apply to time-rated, full-time workers, including temporary piece-rated workers, from the date the Labour and Human Resources Department of the Government of Sindh issues the official notification. Earlier, the federal government announced a 10 percent salary increase for its employees, including those in the armed forces and civil armed forces.
In the budget for 2025-26, the federal government approved the pay raise for government workers and also raised pensions by 10 percent. The Ministry of Finance has issued an official notification, and this increase will also cover employees hired on contract.
