Cynthia Erivo speaks out after Ariana Grande attacker arrested in Singapore
Cynthia Erivo is speaking out after a scary red-carpet experience with Ariana Grande.
The leading women of Wicked: For Good were walking the yellow brick road carpet for the film’s premiere in Singapore on November 13 when a red-carpet crasher known as Pyjama Man jumped the ropes and rushed Grande, putting his arms around her. Erivo was the first to spring into action, putting herself between her co-star and the fan, telling him repeatedly, “Get off her!”
However, Erivo didn’t let the moment spoil her evening; she took to Instagram the next day to share a message for her Singaporean fans.
“Singapore, you have our hearts,” she wrote alongside a carousel of photos from the premiere. “Thank you for the warmest welcome to your garden city,” she added as she shared photos mingling with fans.
Grande also shared a positive message on Instagram despite being visibly shaken up by the incident.
“Hello & i love you Singapore,” she wrote alongside a series of stunning images of the shimmery pink gown she wore to the premiere.
Fans, however, have been less forgiving towards the man, calling him out for practically “assaulting” Grande.
The man showed little remorse, proudly posting a video of the incident to his social media and writing, “Dear Ariana Grande Thank you for letting me Jump on the Yellow Carpet with You [heart emoji].”
The crazed fan, whose real name is Johnson Wen, has since been arrested of being a public nuisance. He was released but is expected back in court on Monday, per CBS.
The Daily Mail reports that the attack triggered Grande’s PTSD stemming from the 2017 terrorist attack at her Manchester concert.
“Ariana has been trying to soothe herself because her mind automatically jumps to the darkest possibilities,” a source told the outlet.
